If Your Startup Looks Like This, You’re Doing It Wrong.

Does this scene look familiar?
Congratulations. You’re not alone.
Although i’ve spent almost twenty years in Silicon Valley working with startups, almost every venture i’ve ever been involved with goes through something that looks a lot like the scene at left. Unfortunately for most startups, it’s not even an isolated incident.
By definition: startups are dangerous, ignorant, immature, paper-clip-and-toothpick operations, usually slapped together overnight, and typically in a constant state of crisis & chaos, run by people who have absolutely no clue what the hell they’re doing.
(and yes, i resemble that remark)
While much of this is unavoidable, over the years there are a few startup mistakes i’ve learned to stop repeating, and a few entrepreneur cheat codes i’ve picked up from other folks a lot smarter than me. in order to pull it all together, i’ve joined forces with Debbie Landa and Dealmaker Media to present a whirlwind one-day conference for geeks and entrepreneurs, on how to create better ways to measure startup success metrics, and use that information to make better startup product & marketing decisions.
Startonomics is about making the world of startups less random, less complicated, more measurable & more repeatable. Startonomics is about creating simple, actionable metrics for startup success.
I hope you’ll check out our speaker lineup and proposed agenda for the event, along with this blog for updates & news as we get closer to the event. With luck, you might even learn something

Hey Dave — thanks for at least photoshop-ing me out of the image — that wouldn’t have done much to bolster my investor’s worries… oh, wait… you’re an investor…
OK… back to the fires… now, where did I put that extinguisher again?
p.s. When are you actually going to give us some samples/actionable implementation examples?

actually, all i did was photoshop the orange hair on that picture of you there…
re: examples, see the Startup Metrics for Pirates presentation from SXSW 2008 earlier this spring:

both Ted Rheingold from Dogster & Todd Vernon from Lijit have case study examples on improving activation / signup conversion.
and i’m expecting TeachStreet will also have some good case studies to show off as well… yes?
